May 4, 1917: Nick Joaquin

On this day in 1917, Filipino writer, playwright, journalist and National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin was born in Paco, Manila.

Regarded as one of the most distinguished Filipino writers in English, Joaquin’s works explored the Philippines’ colonial past under Spain and probed the psychology of social changes from the perspective of the youth.

Among his works include
The Woman Who Had Two Navels, A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino, and Manila, My Manila: A History for the Young.

He was named National Artist in 1976 and died in 2004.
