January 6, 1995: Bojinka Plot uncovered

On this day in 1995, a fire at a room in Doña Josefa Apartments along Quirino Avenue, rented by Pakistani terrorists Ramzi Yousef and Abdul Murad, led the Manila Police to uncover the Bojinka plot to assassinate Pope John Paul II during his visit to Manila and to plant bombs on several commercial airlines heading to the United States. The plot became the basis for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
