January 5, 1855: Telesforo Chuidian

On this day 1855, Filipino-Chinese entrepreneur Telesforo Chuidian was born in Manila. His family owned the La Puerta del Sol in Escolta, a store that sells luxury household items. He also had shares in San Miguel Brewery and owned sugar plantations in Batangas. He was arrested in August 1896 after being suspected of financing the Katipunan uprising. He paid a bribe for his release. Later on, he became the delegate of Malabon to the Malolos Congress of 1898 and was part of its Finance Committee. He died on April 11, 1903.
