January 2, 1942: Japanese forces occupy Manila

On this day in 1942, the Japanese 14th Army entered and occupied the City of Manila, the capital of the Philippines, several days after the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) declared it an open city on December 26, 1941 to avoid further destruction of the city and the loss of life. Meanwhile, Filipino and American forces continue their retreat toward Bataan Peninsula where they would make their last stand in defense of the Philippines against the Japanese.
